Our first impulse when we confront extreme technology is denial and sometimes to push back. Yet, we cannot stop artificial intelligence and robots from making the current jobs obsolete and creating new jobs.

A clear understanding of what can be automated using current level of technology advances is a good way of accurately understanding the current level of what is possible and thereby improving the projection of what is coming in the future.

The truth is automation has the potential to impact x% of every sector. To understand what will change is to ask a simple question;
What percentage of the job or sector has these three components:

  1. Predictable manual work
  2. Processing data
  3. Data Collection

The current technology is advanced enough to automate a vast part of these components and hence most likely to be automated first and fast.

However, the degree of automation possible is at the lower end for the type of tasks requiring:

  1. Unpredictable manual work
  2. Managing people and stakeholders
  3. Applying of expertise

However, technology is advancing at an extreme pace, causing these sectors to also be automated in the future.

Every job or industry is a mix of the six elements above and the first three aspects of every job, and every sector will get automated over time.

For example, here is a big surprise finding for services sector and it’s visible impact:
A recent study by McKinsey shows by 73 percent of the activities workers perform in food service and accommodations have the potential for automation.
