Company lore is part of building a company culture. The good thing about it that it does not cost a dime. In fact, we can build it around the absence of things.
Of late I have been experimenting with creating meaningful “insider” stories. At our ITPL office in Bangalore, which is hard to find among similar looking and building on the campus, we decided not to put on a company name board outside or door. This has to lead to a bit of trouble when we get the occasional visitor or candidate. We often have to escort them even if they locate the building correctly.
Our answer to these still “outsiders” if they ask – why you guys do not have a big fancy board outside, is always – hey we all know where we work, so we do not need a board.
They might think we are frugal, lazy whatever – we do not care what outsiders think of us.
But once we have hired someone into the company, and they ask the same question – any one of the insiders tells them something that lights up a smile on their face.
