I started listening to this book while going out for my morning and evening jogs. It made me reflect that there are times when my lower brain kicks in and I get defensive once in a while.
Of course, now I am keenly aware of that and push to put the prefrontal cortex in charge consciously whenever I catch myself becoming defensive and stop listening to negative feedback.
But doing this everytime means recognizing that it is happening and there can be precious few seconds of delay in making that switch actively.
In this book – I found a shortcut to that – incorporating an attitude of extreme ownership.
A meteor came and hit my car that was parked outside? – It is my fault!
Once you start with that attitude, there is no need to switch over focus to gain control, no need to look outside why something failed because finally, the real answers come from deep introspections and never from blame.
Here are some points form the book that I liked.
Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win
Leaders must own everything in their world. There is no one else to blame.
There are only two types of leaders – Effective and ineffective. There are no bad teams, just bad leaders.
Leadership isn’t one person leading a team. It is a group of leaders working together, up and down the chain of command, to lead.
Mission and team above individuals.
If an individual on the team is not performing at the level required for the team, and continually fails to meet standards despite training, the leader must make the tough call to terminate and hire others who can get the job done.
Explaining to the team member why something is being asked to being done, is a critical step in making sure the team buys into the mission and executes well. Good team members must take leadership to ask why as well so they can explain buy-in from their subordinates.
I might come back and add a few more points.
Here is a link to buy this book. Entertaining read as it alternates between real-life battle situations and business in each chapter.
